The Witcher season 5 doesn’t have a release date yet, but its showrunner confirms a shorter wait time is the ‘plan’
I'm usually dead against the two-part release strategy that has crept into Netflix releases like Emily in Paris season 4 and Wednesday season 2. However, The Witcher season 4 could have benefitted from it, as really, it feels like half a series.
All eight episodes are now available to stream, and while a lot is packed into them, the season 4 ending pretty much leaves us back where we started. Why? it's all vital context for what's going to happen in season 5, which will be the final season of the show.
But surely we're not going to be kept waiting another two years before season 5 addresses the questions we all want answers to, right?
While The Witcher season 5 has yet to be given an official release date, cast members Joey Batey, Laurence Fishburne and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told me how this is all part of a bigger 'plan' to hopefully see the conclusion a lot sooner.
The Witcher season 5 was always 'planned' to be released closer to season 4, says cast
"Certainly that was the plan," Batey says when I ask the trio when we can expect season 5. "It's essentially season 4 parts one and two, that's how we shot it.
"We shot it in 18 months, all in one go, and Lauren wrote it in that way. She wrote all the episodes in one room during the same period. So we turned up, feeling like we were filming Lord of the Rings. Being away from everyone, you get locked into this journey. And I think that comes through in the actual show."
Fishburne adds: "What's coming in season 5 is absolutely huge."

Intrigue! While we can broadly guess what The Witcher season 5 will cover (namely bringing Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri back together), the jury is out for its release date. I'm hoping we'll see something akin to Squid Game season 3 being released six months after season 2, which means a release date for season 5 might be announced in the coming weeks.
If Netflix wants to keep up the momentum, confirming season 5 plans before Christmas would be the best way forward. Stranger Things season 5 is soon going to pull the streamer's focus, so let's hope things get moving sooner rather than later.
